Ready to Buy? Ask These Questions First
Buying a house can be exciting! Whether you’re purchasing for the first time or you're hoping this will be your forever home, it’s easy to get caught up in the process. However, because it is such a big purchase, it’s wise to slow down and ask the right questions before signing on the dotted line.
Here are 3 big categories to narrow in on when you’re thinking through buying a home.
1. Home History
Unless you’re building a home, the house you’re thinking about purchasing has a history. Here are a few of the big questions to ask about the house’s past.
How old is the roof/carpet/air conditioner/etc.?
Has the house been flooded or significantly damaged?
Are there add-ons?
Has there ever been an infestation?
Don’t be afraid to ask for the details!
2. Neighborhood Details
Purchasing a home means new neighbors, new local stores, and new “normals”, so asking for the details ahead of time can help you prepare. These are some good questions to ask.
What are the neighborhood demographics?
Are there construction noises, highway noises, or other nearby noises to be aware of?
What schools are nearby?
Where do most people grocery shop, work out, and go to church?
3. Costs
Unfortunately, home costs don’t end on closing day. Owning a home costs money, and it’s a good idea to go into the process having somewhat of an idea you can expect on a monthly basis. Ask these questions before purchasing.
What are the normal monthly utility costs?
Are there HOA fees? If so, how much are they?
Any other costs from the city or county to expect?
What will my mortgage be if I put X amount down?
