How to Stage Your Home in December

“Should I put up Christmas decorations if I’m planning on listing my house?” Nearly every time this season rolls around, I have someone reach out and ask this question. And their hesitations are completely understandable. Putting up Christmas decorations can add a lot of “clutter” which can be tricky when you’re selling.

However, my answer is always “Yes!”. When potential buyers walk into a house, they want to be able to picture their family living there. A well-decorated house for Christmas is cozy, inviting, and can paint the picture of fun times together. So, you don’t need to go crazy, but it is a good idea to put up some tasteful Christmas decorations.

Here are a few semi-easy additions to add that make a big impact.

Put up a Christmas Tree

This may seem obvious, but if there’s one Christmas decoration you should include, it should be the tree! Now, you don’t need to go crazy with ribbons, ornaments, and garland if you don’t want, but even having a simple tree makes an impact. Be sure the tree is placed somewhere that doesn’t hinder the flow of the house though!

Use Garland on the Stair Rail and/or Headboard

It’s simple and easy. Adding a basic garland to a few key places in your house can really add to the festive feel. It also can create the continuation of a Christmas theme throughout your entire house.

Add Small Decorations to the Kitchen

No matter the house, the kitchen will always be one of the most “lived-in” areas. Because of this, it can be a good idea to add a few decorative items. Try adding a small wreath on the window. Add a festive cutting board on the counter that serves as decor and as a way to cut food. Put a small garland around the cabinets you never open. Small measures go a long way and make your home feel cozy.

Put Out Some Cozy Blankets and Pillows

When it comes to the couch and the bedrooms, consider adding a few neutral or Christmas-themed blankets and pillows. This will help your home feel warm and appealing.

Don’t Forget the Exterior

Putting up Christmas lights is a big job, so if that’s something you cut out this year, that’s okay. However, be sure to at least add a Christmas wreath to your door and/or a fun welcome mat. If you really want to make a statement, classy Christmas lights are a great option though ;)
