Should You Call a Pro or DIY?

Should You Call a Pro or DIY?

If you’ve ever thought “I could do that” as a homeowner, you’re not alone. And the truth is, you might not be wrong. Lots of times when it comes to maintaining and even improving a house, there’s lots of room for successful DIY. However, there are some things, that are best left to a professional.

Whether you are planning to sell soon, or just want to be a good homeowner, here are a few “easy” DIY’s and a few things best left to the professionals.

DIY

When it comes to DIY, it’s important you know your own skill level, time availability, and budget. These 3 factors are big things to consider when deciding to do it yourself or not. If you have the skill, time, and money, here are a few things to go for:

  • General home maintenance - when it comes to upkeep like lawn maintenance, cleaning out gutters, changing light bulbs, replacing air filters, and things like this, go for it! You can do it (and if you don’t know how...Google can help).

  • Small aesthetic improvements - think painting, wallpapering, replacing outdated features, changing door or cabinet hardware, etc.

  • “Sub-contracting” - this one is a little tricky, but if you decide to hire a contractor for any job in your house, consider “sub-contracting” pieces of it to yourself. For example, maybe you want a contractor to build out your attic, but you can install trim and even potentially install the flooring yourself.

Time to Call a Pro

Professionals are called professionals for a reason...they know what they’re doing. Oftentimes these professionals have spent years in formal training, apprenticeships, and more to learn their trade. In these situations, it’s normally a good idea to leave it to them.

  • Anything having to do with electricity - electricity is no joke, and if you don’t know what you’re doing, there’s a real chance of serious injury. If you want to add can lighting, update light fixtures, or have problems, it’s a good idea to call an electrician.

  • Plumbing - Whether your kid flushed a toy down the toilet or you want to add a sink into your laundry room, a plumber is the person for you. These projects often take skill and time.

  • AC and heating - here’s another area that you might not want to dabble in. It may be obvious, but these are often complex systems that may make a DIY unreasonable or at the least, unpractical.

  • Buying or selling your home - I know I’m slightly biased, but when you’re ready to buy or sell, it’s time to call a professional (hey there ;). Realtors are trained to help you get the best deal, find the right place, and stand in your corner for every step of the process. You don’t have to do it alone!

These lists are by no means comprehensive and are more vague than specific instances, but if you have questions I’m always happy to help and/or refer professionals that I know and trust. Also, if you ever start to DIY and get in over your head, know that it’s never too late to call a professional!
