Spring Cleaning Tips to Sell Your Home
I recently saw one of my friends post a list on social media about the progression of Oklahoma weather that went like this:
winter
spring
winter
really cold winter
spring
tornado season 1
winter’s back
spring
tornado season 2
summer
really hot summer
fall
just kidding! still summer
tornado season 3
fall
winter
tornado season 4
christmas
I couldn't stop laughing because it is SO true! But, I’m choosing to believe that winter is finally over and it’s officially spring! I’m in desperate need of some sunshine, beautiful flowers, and new growth.
Plus, with spring comes spring cleaning which is one of my favorite things to recommend to current and future clients planning on selling a home. Whether you are watching Marie Kondo’s “Tidying Up” or not, there are things you can do now that will make selling your home so much easier.
Take a look at these spring cleaning tips for home selling:
Purge Things From Every Room in Your House One by One
Go through each room and open those junk drawers and cabinets that are stuffed to the brim and get rid of what you don’t need. Make a pile of things that you can sell, a pile of things to donate, and a pile of things that just need to be trashed. This task can definitely feel overwhelming so just take it one room at a time and get it done! That way, when your home sells and you have to pack up and move, you won’t be packing up junk and unnecessary items.
Wash Away Winter Grime
Yep, this means cleaning the windows that are caked with winter mud, deep cleaning carpets and rugs, and cleaning under furniture and appliances. Just think about anything that has been sitting all winter, and work to move it, clean it, and give it a good refresh.
Freshen Up Your Furniture
Whether you have leather, cloth, wood, or something else, take some time to give it a good refresh. Maybe this is using an upholstery cleaner or conditioner, a suede brush, or a polisher. Research what the best method is to clean each piece of your furniture and make a point to do it well.
Get Organized
Once things are purged and cleaned, it’s time to get organized. Go through your pantry and refrigerator and make sure that everything is in the right container and spot. Invest in some new containers and storage boxes that will help things in closets to look orderly too. Finally, organize cabinets in a way that makes the most sense to you. Remember, when you’re selling your home, buyers will be opening those drawers and cabinets and you don’t want them to see an organized mess!
Do a Safety Check
Spring cleaning is the perfect time to check out all of those safety devices and make sure they are working and in tip-top condition. This means checking batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and making sure you have fire extinguishers in key places like the kitchen.
Don’t Forget the Outside
Warm weather is (almost) here which means you’ll be able to spend more time outside! So, take some time to clean and repair any patio furniture you may have. Maybe even buy some fun outdoor pillows to brighten things up! It’s also a good idea to plant some spring flowers if you plan on having people come buy to look at buying your house.
What are some of your favorite ways to spring clean whether you’re planning on selling your home or not? I’d love to get even more inspiration (and motivation) to do my own spring cleaning this year!
