Thinking About Building a Home? Ask These 5 Questions First
Have you ever considered building a home? If you’ve stalked the housing market without finding something you love, or have always dreamed of customizing a home, building might be the right step for you. However, it’s not always all that it seems.
Here are a few questions to ask if you want to build a new home.
1. Should I Custom-Build or Go With a Builder-Designed Home?
Think through if you’d like to custom-build or go with a builder-designed home. There are many advantages to both of these options. If you purchase land, you can custom-build your home and can better control the timeline. On the other hand, if you want neighbors or want lots of the decisions made for you (think layout, design options, etc.), a builder-designed home in a neighborhood is a great option!
2. Where Should I Live During the Build?
This is tricky and can be different for each person. It’s important to consider whether you want to live in your current home during the build, or if it’s better for you to live elsewhere while your new home is being built. Talk to your local mortgage lender about which option is best for you so you know when to put your current home on the market.
3. What Should I Do During the Build?
If you chose to live in your current home during your build process, it’s important to get your home ready to sell. This means decluttering, staging your home, and working with a Realtor to get your home listed.
4. What About the Timeline?
This can be the trickiest part of selling your home and moving into a newly built home. Building homes are not always on a strict timeline and often vary from the time they say they will be done to the actual finish time. As your Realtor, I will do my best to make sure we set a closing date that works best for you and your family so you can avoid paying for two mortgages.
5. What’s the Final Step?
Closing day is always the goal! Once the closing date is set, it’s time to finish packing and prepare for life in your new home! This is my favorite day as a Realtor because it often marks the first step of your new adventure. The joy on this day is simply the best!
