How to Winterize Your Home

How to Winterize Your Home

For those of you who have lived in Oklahoma for a while, you know that Oklahoma weather is unpredictable. Some winters feel like we live “up north” with snow, and ice, and wind, and other winters feel like winter never comes! Because of the uncertainty, it’s a great idea to make sure you’re prepared for whatever comes our way.

Here are a few of my recommended ways to prepare your home for winter (whether you’re thinking about selling sometime in the near future or not)!

  • Check your insulation: If you need to add some more this is a perfect time since it will help you save on your heating bills throughout the season. It’s also a good idea to add weather strips to doors and windows if you don’t have them. (Did you know you can even order these on Amazon for pretty cheap?!)

  • Remove any tree branches that could possibly fall on your house if it were to be weighed down by ice or snow. Nobody wants to wake up to a damaged roof!

    • Side note: Does anyone remember when the Top Golf poles snapped because of ice?! I remember being amazed at the damage ice can cause!

  • Speaking of roofs, it’s also a good idea to take a little time to clean out your gutters!

  • Take a look at your fireplace and make sure it’s clean and working properly. That way you and your family can cuddle by the fireplace with a cup of hot chocolate on those bitter, cold days.

  • I also like to recommend having a technician come out to look at your heater. By having them perform this simple check, it will (hopefully) help you avoid having to have them out on the coldest day of the year when your heater stops working. If you’re looking for someone, feel free to reach out. I’d love to recommend some people who do quality work!

  • Be sure you keep an eye on the weather, and when it freezes keep your faucet dripping to help prevent your pipes from freezing.

  • Finally, my favorite tip is to prepare to store your lawn mower by using or removing all of the fuel. This means we all get a break from mowing for a few months (woohoo!).

Hopefully these few things will help you feel more prepared and ready to embrace the winter season!
